END-OF-PROGRAM COMPETENCIES & REQUIRED CLINICAL EXPERIENCES FOR THE CLINICAL NURSE LEADER –

This section delineates the competencies expected of every graduate of a CNL master’s degree education program. A minimum set of clinical experiences required to attain the end-of–program competencies also is included. Describe the activities you completed over your six semesters that met each Clinical Experience in the column below. Do not remove existing text and add your activities in blue text in the left hand column as shown in the bullet points below.

  • Met with facility CEO regarding annual report of patient satisfaction outcomes. Discussed major complaint of wait time. Initiated research and wrote plan to implement change that would affect patient perception of wait time to increase patient satisfaction scores.

Communicate within a conflict milieu with nurses and other health care professionals who provide care to the same clients in that setting and in other settings.

  • Participated in nursing meeting to discuss medication errors. Input opinion regarding physician orders and nurse education.

Review and evaluate patient care guidelines/protocols and implement a guideline to address an identified patient care issue like pain management or readiness for discharge; follow-up to evaluate the impact on the issue.

  • Identified lack of adequate discharge material for Spanish speaking patients. Applied research on cultural care of patients to convince management and PACU nurses of need to acquire all discharge instructions in Spanish and encourage translators for patient instruction.
  • Follow up: About 80% of patient instructions are now available in Spanish.

Discover, disseminate and apply evidence for practice and for changing practice.

  • Observed that moderate number of patients coming out of monitored sedation cases were being “diagnosed” with obstructive sleep apnea by anesthesiologists. Reviewed literature and best practices regarding care of this population. Met with Medical Director and Director of Nursing, presented suggestion of using STOP-Bang questionnaires for all cases and obtaining end tidal cO2 monitors for PACU for patients

Identify potential equity and justice issues `within the health care setting related to client care.

  • Recognized lack of effective and adequate education material for Spanish speaking and/or low reading/ comprehension level patients. After researching, obtained free educational literature regarding both hypertension and diabetes in easy to read format, both in English and Spanish from the Preventative Cardiovascular Nurses Association. These are now kept on the unit when high risk/low compliance patients are identified.

Nursing Leadership

Advocate

 

 

Analyze the care of a patient cohort and the care environment in light of ANA Nursing Standards of Care and the Code of Ethics.

  • Advocated for use of STOP-Bang questionnaire to identify patients with OSA.
  • Advocated for end tidal Co2 Monitors in PACU setting to identify early respiratory distress.
  • Addressed lack of resources for Spanish speaking and or low education level patients and took steps toward resolution.

Analyze interdisciplinary patterns of communication and chain of command both internal and external to the unit that impact care.
